Before the age of manufactured chemical dyes, for example, purple was extracted from a shellfish called murex, and it took 12,000 0f the slimy buggers to make 1.5 grams of the dye (I know because I read it on the internet, so its gotta be true). So because of its rarity it was known as a symbol of royalty.
