I didn't realize how much I liked old typewriters until today, when I picked up a Smith-Corona Sterling at a local flea market for $8. I've been wandering around the internet, trying to find some information on it and I think it was made between 1945 and 1949 according to the serial number, 4A118726. The only sad thing about it is the fact that the carriage doesn't move when I type or push the lever over. I read somewhere that it could be a mainspring or a drawband(?) and if it's the latter, I can fix it myself with some fishing line. I was just wondering if you knew anything about this beautiful machine I just bought and if you had any idea on how to fix it. Since this is my first time here, I hope I'm not being too forward in asking. If I can't figure it out, I'll have to find somewhere to take it but the nearest typewriter store/service center is 63 miles away! No matter what it costs to fix, it'll be worth it just because it's so beautiful but also because of how much they're selling for online. I'm never going to let mine go, but it's nice to know it's worth something. I'll probably leave it to my 3 year old when I'm gone one day.
Listen to me rambling! I'm sorry!
Anyway! I love the blog, so I'm going to continue reading your back posts! I hope I hear from you though. Looking at this typewriter is killing me, knowing I can't use it when that's all I can think of doing!
Oh! Here's a link to some pictures of it, just in case you'd like to see it:

http://skillzmcfly.tumblr.com/post/7212436417/i-had-to-go-back-to-the-flea-market-today-becauseNellhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02137467390394139273noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3195869989354907758.post-761411539427739172011-01-15T19:35:04.959-08:002011-01-15T19:35:04.959-08:00I've noticed the "4xR" prefix on a c...I've noticed the "4xR" prefix on a couple of these. My own Tower Challenger is "4CR". I'm all but sure that all of these "post-discontinuation" Speedlines were made for resellers.

"Tabulator" was a Sears model name. Surprised the Tower name isn't on it.

And the Eaton's name has come up a couple of times recently, as distributors of the Viking line of rebadged Smith-Coronas.Machines of Loving Gracehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09286532870875619199noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3195869989354907758.post-34548148661064639282011-01-15T06:44:14.086-08:002011-01-15T06:44:14.086-08:00Wow, this really is doctorate-level stuff, and I f...Wow, this really is doctorate-level stuff, and I feel educated!
